With his team coming off losses to Detroit and Toronto - teams, like Washington, that are currently not in the playoff picture - Wittman wanted the Wizards to get back to being the free-flowing, ball-sharing team they were before the all-star break. They responded with a performance in which seven players scored in double figures and the team had 27 assists.

The win was the ninth in 11 games at home for the Wizards (16-37), who scored their second-most points of the season, improved to 11-9 with Wall in the lineup and swept their season series with Denver for the first time since 2001-02. The Nuggets (34-22), who recently won nine games in a row, lost their fourth straight road game and dropped to 11-19 overall away from the Mile High City.

"I think we got back to where we wanted to be before the break started," said John Wall who had 10 assists to go along with 14 points. "In the game before this when we played Toronto we didn't play as a team and trust each other. But the last two days at practice we got back to trusting each other. On any given night you never know who may be our leading scorer and that's one good thing about this team."

"He is going to be a good player. The comparison to Ray Allen is legit. He seems like he is getting more comfortable with the ball and making more decisions. I like their back court a lot. Their back court plays like I like to play. They play fast and athletic. Penetrate well. Beal is going to be one of the top shooters in the game in time."

After an extremely competitive first half, something changed at the opening of the second. The Wizards jumped all over the Nuggets, opening the half on a 13-0 run and mustering up a 16 point lead by the time the quarter was done. The Nuggets did not score their first points of the quarter until five and a half minutes in. The fourth quarter was once again a different story line, as after the Wizards would stretch the lead to 18, the Nuggets would run off an 18-4 run to cut the lead to four with six minutes to go in the game. The two teams went back and forth over the next five minutes and the Nuggets found themselves within two with less than a minute to go. John Wall though would hit a 19-footer for the dagger with 13 seconds to play to push the lead to four and close the game.

Whatever defensive adjustments head coach Randy Wittman arranged for during the break played out big-time for the Wizards. Washington started the third quarter on a 13-0 run, boosted by a Wall-to-Martell Webster alley oop that brought the crowd of 16,527 to its feet.

"[Defense was] all we talked about at halftime," Wittman said after the game. "We didn't talk anything offensively. We got four straight stops coming out in the third quarter and I thought our intensity picked up from that defensive standpoint."

The inconsistency that John Wall showed this game almost seemed like a microcosm of his entire career. He racked up the assists, but had quite a few costly fourth quarter turnovers that allowed the Nuggets to get as close as they did. He had three blocks, but was torched by Ty Lawson much of the game. But give credit where credit is due: on a final possession where the Wizards needed a score, John Wall drained a crucial jump shot. Maybe we are seeing progress right before our very eyes.

The Wizards never seem to make it easy for us folks. A 16-point lead was nearly squandered after the Nuggets opened up the final period outscoring the Wizards 25-12. The game seemed to be moving at a very comfortable pace after the Wizards went lockdown on defense, holding the Nuggets to only 14 points in the 3rd after scoring 64 in the first half. The Nuggets avenged their poor start of the second half with a 35 point 4th quarter rally, but John Wall put the clamps on a Denver comeback with a few clutch jumpers -- yes, jumpers -- that sealed a much needed victory for the Wizards.

The Washington Wizards scored three consecutive quarters of 30 points or more against the Nuggets, as the Nuggets offered little resistance either in the paint or on the perimeter. Emeka Okafor looked like a juggernaut, powering through the paper-maiche like defense of Kenneth Faried and JaVale McGee all game. As mentioned in the preview, the Wizards are the worst team in the NBA at scoring - yet they broke their season per game average by the third quarter, scoring 94 points and nearly 30 above their season average. The defensive rotations looked confused, there was little cohesion on the perimeter, and - stop me if you've heard this before - the Nuggets once again let another team obliterate them from beyond the arc, as the Wizards shot 11-24 from the perimeter, and were 10-19 at one point.

"They're a better team than their record says," Denver forward Wilson Chandler said of the Wizards. "And they just played harder than us, that's the bottom line, guards and the bigs."

...

The Nuggets lost at home to Washington on Jan. 18, an embarrassing performance in front of the Pepsi Center crowd. But the Wizards had started to play good ball then - and still are, it seems, or at least against Denver.

"I think sometimes when we play so-called better teams, we feel as though we have something to prove," Wizards guard Bradley Beal said. "I think we come out harder, that much harder."

WASHINGTON -- John Wall's postgame interviews can be full of cliches, but every so often, he is really good at breaking down specific plays. Following tonight's 119-113 win over the Denver Nuggets, Wall went into great detail about what he saw on the game-sealing jump shot with 13.9 seconds remaining.

Here's video of the play for those who missed it:

Now, I'll cede the floor to Wall:

"I think they were so worried about Nene. I was doing a great job coming off picks, and our bigs were doing a great job of setting screens and getting open. I had been finding them with pocket passes [all game]," Wall said. "I think they had a miscommunication and ran to him. So I was open and I had to take the shot."

I noticed that the Wizards began the play with 12 seconds on the shot clock, which seemed early in a situation where you want to burn as much clock as possible, so I asked Wall why he initiated the play then.

"We kind of knew they were switching [the screen]. If they switched and put a big on me, we were going to try to swing it to Nene in the post and make sure we had enough time to get that through," he said. "But they didn't switch and I hit the shot."

Hitting a jump shot can be an adventure for Wall, of course, but this time, he knocked it down and sealed a big win.

The Wizards let things get more nerve-racking than they should have, but in the end, they had just enough to hang on for a 119-11 win over the Denver Nuggets in a game that they led by 18 early in the fourth quarter.

WASHINGTON -- You knew the Wizards would have to hold off a Nuggets run after taking a big lead early in the fourth quarter, but you probably didn't think it'd be so nerve-racking. The Nuggets kept coming and coming, and the Wizards played like they were hanging on by a thread.

In the end, though, there just wasn't enough time. The Wizards made the big plays when they needed to make them and came away with a 119-113 win in an entertaining game. This was a much-needed result after the disaster that took place on Tuesday night, and it says a lot about this team's character that they were able to hang on against an explosive Nuggets team.

Washington took a 16-point lead after three quarters, but as with any good team, the Nuggets made a push. A layup by Andre Miller cut the Wizards' lead to 10, and after a turnover by Trevor Ariza, Corey Brewer got two points when a goaltending was called. On the other end, Wall missed a jumper, didn't drop back far enough and allowed JaVale McGee to get behind him. McGee hit one of two free throws to cut the lead to seven. The Nuggets changed their pick and roll coverages on John Wall during this stretch, dropping the big man back further to contain his drives. It confused Wall, and I'm not sure why they didn't do this sooner.

The Nuggets kept cutting the gap down, eventually getting it to two with under a minute left. Both teams made big plays, but two missed Wall isolation opportunities -- a horrendous turnover and a blown floater over Kenneth Faried -- gave the Nuggets the chance to tie the score. Ty Lawson drove and got to the rim as usual, but Nene came over to swat his shot away and deflect the ball off a Nuggets player, giving Washington the ball back with 32.6 seconds left.

This was a spot where the Wizards had failed so many times this year. This time, they started a Wall/Nene pick and roll with 12 seconds on the shot clock, very early for a late-clock situation. After the Nuggets closed it off one way, they tried again going right. This time, both Nuggets players left Wall, and he canned the wide-open jumper to push the lead to four with 13.7 seconds left. Wall had missed that shot so many times, so to see him make it was huge.

That ended up sealing things. Miller missed a layup on the next possession, and Washington survived.

The Wizards led throughout most of the first half, but the Nuggets ended up closing the gap by the end of the second quarter and tied the game at 64 at halftime. The Wizards were certainly shooting well, hitting 55 percent from the field and 53 percent from three-point range, but they were also sloppy, committing nine turnovers, playing poor defense and losing track of the Nuggets in transition.

But the beginning of the third quarter was much better for Wall and the Wizards. After playing porous defense in the first half, Washington dialed up the intensity, holding the Nuggets scoreless for the first five and a half minutes of the quarter. This is the Nuggets, mind you. They score a lot of points.

What happened? At the start, Wall got his hands in the passing lanes, forcing turnovers and finding open men on the break. But eventually, others contributed. The Nuggets love to try to beat you off the dribble, but all of Washington's perimeter defenders did what they could to close off the lane. With the lanes shut down, the Nuggets had nowhere to turn.

On the other end, Wall continued to fare well when the Nuggets trapped him on pick and rolls, finding Nene for an open jumper and consistently making the simple play. (Why Denver guarded Wall this way, I'll never know). It helped Washington get into a rhythm offensively. Denver made a run to cut the deficit, but a strong third-quarter set up Washington's big lead that proved to be enough.

Overall, it wasn't a perfect performance, but it was much better than Tuesday night. The heroes include Beal (16 points, 12 rebounds), Okafor (17 points and 13 rebounds) and Ariza (16 points). Seven guys scored in double figures, which will make Wittman happy. I'll take it.

WASHINGTON -- Randy Wittman spoke more about the Washington Wizards' decision to trade Jordan Crawford to the Boston Celtics, and while he repeated many of the points made at shootaround, he did go into more detail about the decision.

Wittman was asked whether he was disappointed by Crawford's behavior after his benching.

"I'm not going to get into those kinds of things, [but] I do observe that," he said. "That is a big part of being a part of a team. How do you handle adversity. It's important for all our guys. Roles fluctuate. In this business, you've got to stay committed no matter if it's happening good for you or not. That applies to all our guys. Being in this league as long as I have, you see guys that have been in this league 13-14 years just because they took that approach."

I asked Wittman if he would have done anything differently to reach Crawford if he had the chance to do it all over again.

"You always, as a coach, look back and evaluate yourself, evaluate how you evaluate your players, all that stuff. That'll never change with me, whether it's how I conducted a game, how I substituted, how I develop a player, sure. Those are all things you look at," he said.

George Karl was also asked how he'd have handled a player like Crawford, an especially good question because Karl coached J.R. Smith for so many years.

"There's positive energy and there's negative energy. From the recollection that I feel, there was so much negative energy because of the situation and how it was handled, where it was going and how it was coming, he probably made it very difficult for them to keep him on the team. But there is a need for his talent. Being able to score points as quickly as he can score is a really powerful thing," he said.

Karl later added that he and Smith wore each other out after a while because "you're managing negative energy rather than managing positive energy."

The Denver Nuggets are in town, and here's your game preview.

Where, When, and What Channel: The game will start at 7 p.m. at the Verizon Center. You can watch it on Comcast SportsNet.

What happened the last time they played: John Wall sealed a shocking win by blocking Ty Lawson's shot at the end of the game to give the Wizards a 112-108 victory in Denver.

What happened to Denver after that loss: After falling at home, the Nuggets rattled off nine straight, including an overtime win over Oklahoma City to get the ball rolling. The streak finally ended in Boston where they lost in triple-overtime on the second night of a back to back on the road. Tired legs from those games hurt the Nuggets as they would go on to lose the next two on the road before the break. They started the second half of the season on the right foot, however, getting revenge against Boston with a 97-90 win at home.

What might surprise you about JaVale McGee: Here are some fun facts to discuss with your friends while watching tonight's game:

Did you know JaVale McGee started more games his rookie year (14) than he has so far this season (0).

Did you know JaVale McGee has a higher PER than Chris Bosh, DeMarcus Cousins and Stephen Curry this season?

Did you know McGee is one of only eight players averaging over 18.5 points and 9 rebounds per 36 minutes? The other seven: Kevin Love, Tim Duncan, Blake Griffin, Al Jefferson, DeMarcus Cousins, Chris Kaman and...Andray Blatche.

Did you know that Nene, plantar fasciitis and all, is averaging more minutes per game this year than McGee?

That last fact is pretty stunning, isn't it? Either McGee is getting squeezed in George Karl's rotation, or there's something he's doing that isn't reflected in those numbers. We're leaning the latter.
