The Washington Wizards were knocked out of the Las Vegas Summer League Tournament Saturday evening in an 88-85 loss to the still-undefeated Chicago Bulls.

The game was a back-and-forth affair. There nine ties and 13 lead changes in the game, but the Bulls even though the lead changed hands often, Chicago led for most of the game and pulled out to a ten point lead in the fourth quarter before Washington mounted a late charge to make it close. Unfortunately for the Wizards, Eddie’s last three fell just short as their trip to Vegas came to a close.

The Good

Jarell Eddie - After struggling to find his rhythm from outside for most of his time in Summer League, Eddie was dialed in on Saturday night, connecting on five of his seven three-point attempts. He also chipped in with six rebounds and four assists.

Nate Wolters - He delivered his best performance in Las Vegas, finishing with 16 points on 10 shots, 7 assists, 5 rebounds and only 1 turnover. He also had the best plus/minus of anyone on the team, with a +14 in just under 32 minutes of action.

The Bad

The Bench - For those of you doing math at home, Washington was -17 in the 8 minutes where Nate Wolters was on the bench. Washington has struggled to get good point guard play for most of Summer League as Wolters has battled through an ankle injury, and their struggles to get production with him off the court cost them against the Bulls.

Kelly Oubre - It was easily Oubre’s worst performance in Las Vegas. He went 4-15 from the field and committed four fouls. The most unfortunate part of Oubre’s struggles was that everyone else in the starting lineup shot the ball quite well, but it just didn’t translate to Oubre, who once again, tried to do too much at times which led to bad misses and blocked shots.

The not great, but not terrible either

Aaron White - He had a surprisingly nice performance, nailing three of his six three-point attempts and playing some solid defense on Bobby Portis at times. He was also more active on the glass than he’s been throughout Summer League, snagging 8 boards. He still has a ways to go, but he took a nice step in the right direction.

After looking dead in the water, the Wizards come back from 17 points down to beat the Hawks 71-60 Thursday afternoon in the second round of the Las Vegas Summer League Tournament. Kelly Oubre Jr. scored a game-high 22 points while Danuel House added 15 points, 12 of which coming in the fourth quarter.

This game was a tale of two halves.

The Wizards were sleepwalking through the first quarter as they missed their first six shots of the game. It took them 3:30 for the team to get on the scoreboard.

The Wizards were equally as unimpressive to start the second quarter missing 12 of their first 13 shots to start the period as the Hawks opened up on a 15-3 run. Even with the slow starts to the first and second quarters, the Wizards were down just 12 at halftime, 37-25.

After trailing by as many as 17 points in the third quarter, the Wizards flipped the switch led by Oubre who scored eight points in the period. The Wizards clawed their way back and trailed by just 3, 48-45 entering the fourth quarter.

Danuel House took over in the final quarter, scoring the first eight points of the quarter for the Wizards to help them get in front and pull away. Kelly Oubre hit a three-pointer at the 50 second mark to put the game away and help the Wizards complete the comeback and win 71-60.

The Wizards will take on the Bulls in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

The Great

Danuel House -€” House was the second-highest scorer on the team with 15 points on 3-8 shooting (12 coming in the fourth quarter). He stepped up when the Wizards needed him most and the rest of the team fed off of his play. He may not claim a roster spot, but House is working his way into an invite to training camp at the very least.

The Second Half - The Wizards outscored the Hawks 46-23 in the second half.

The Good

Kelly Oubre Jr. -€” The stat sheet doesn't tell the whole story. Oubre scored 22 points to go along with six rebounds today. Oubre was 3-6 from three-point range and once again, looked very confident in rising up from distance. However, when the Wizards were in a bit of a scoring drought, Oubre put his head down and tried to force the matter, which didn't go so well. He turned the ball over four times and got blocked several times at the rim.

He salvaged all that with a three-point dagger with just under a minute remaining.

Nate Wolters -€” He seemed to hit floaters in the lane or would knock down jumpers from 10-15 feet out when the Wizards were in a bit of a scoring funk. He didn't do anything flashy but had key baskets when it looked like the lead might get out of hand.

The Bad

Aaron White -€” Aside from his dunk late in the fourth quarter, White was a non-factor once again today. He shot just 2-8 from the field and has a knack for disappearing.

The First Half -€” The Wizards had more turnovers (10) than made field goals (7) in the first half on just two assists.

Thanks to a great start to Summer League play, the Wizards earned a first-round bye in the Las Vegas. But as fate would have it, they’ll be pitted against the only team that knocked them off during pool play: The Atlanta Hawks, who advanced after a convincing win over the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday afternoon.

Washington has some areas where they can improve from the first time they played against Atlanta on Sunday. The Wizards fell behind by 18 in the first half, but whittled the deficit down to one point before ultimately losing by eight.

Part of the reason for the team’s struggles were the rotation changes the team made for that game, giving the minutes they usually gave to Sterling Gibbs, Shawn Dawson, and Daniel Ochefu to Nate Wolters, James Nunnally, and Kaleb Tarczewski. With more on the line in Thursday’s game, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Wizards go back to the rotation that worked effectively against Utah and Brooklyn.

At the same time, the Hawks will also have some extra firepower they didn’t get to use on Sunday. Taurean Prince, the 12th overall pick in this year’s draft, wasn’t able to play in Sunday’s game because Atlanta’s trade to acquire him hadn’t officially gone through yet. In the two games he’s played since the trade became official, he’s averaging 14.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game while shooting 45.4 percent from the field.

The winner of Thursday’s game will advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday. There they will either take on the winner of Thursday's Bulls-Mavericks game.

The loser of the Wizards-Hawks game will play a consolation game on Friday.

Kelly Oubre Jr. and Jarell Eddie were the high scorers for the Wizards contributing 16 points apiece. Danuel House chipped in with 13 points as the Wizards won their final game before tournament play.

The Nets kept the Wizards at bay for much of this game as they led 66-60 entering the fourth quarter. Shawn Dawson and Danuel House started the fourth quarter with two rim-rattling dunks less than one minute apart.

The win lifts the Wizards to 2-1 in preliminary play. They will find out who they face in the tournament on Tuesday evening.

The Good

Jarell Eddie -€” Aside from his game-winning layup, Eddie had a very nice game scoring 16 points on 7-12 shooting. Eddie showed he is more than just a three-point shooter as Eddie curled off screens for mid-range jumpers and was able to get to the hole at times too. Eddie had a couple of open looks but went just 2-6 from three-point range this afternoon. It's pretty clear that if the Wizards don't sign Eddie, there will be other NBA teams interested in signing him.

Kelly Oubre Jr. - Oubre also scored 16 points this afternoon on 5-13 shooting. Oubre hit his first three-pointer of the game but went just 1-7 the rest of the way. Oubre was in attack mode all game as he was able to finish at the hole and get to the line knocking down 4-5 free throws. He was fearless in attacking the rim and seems much more confident in his jump shot even though they didn't all fall. Oubre also had six rebounds and three assists to stuff the stat sheet.

The Bad

Kelly Oubre Jr. -€” At times Oubre was a bit out of control today. Oubre, who doesn't lack confidence, often drove all the way to the hole in transition or semi-transition when he would have been better suited pulling up for a 10-12 foot jumper. Too often, he'd take the ball all the way to the hole but there were big men waiting for him. In addition, Oubre had issues staying in front of Rondae Hollis-Jefferson who scored a game-high 19 points. Oubre gambled a tad too often on defense and often got caught reaching evidenced by his seven fouls (Players are allowed to commit up to 10 fouls in Summer League play). Still, there's no need to worry, all of this can be fixed.

Free-Throw Shooting -€” The Wizards regular season free-throw shooting woes spilled into this game as the team shot a forgettable 57 percent (12-21) from the charity stripe.

Tuesday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets was Jarell Eddie’s last chance to show why he deserves a spot on the Wizards’ final roster. He made a pretty solid case througout the game for why he should stick around, scoring 16 points and snagging three boards.

However, he saved his best argument came in the final seconds. With the game knotted up at 85, Eddie stripped Rondae Hollis-Jefferson as he drove to the rim and got his layup off before the buzzer to lift the Wizards to an 87-85 win.

We’re guessing the Wizards won’t want to get rid of him after today’s big win.

The Wizards struggled out of the gate against the Hawks on Sunday afternoon, getting down by as much as 18 in the first half. They couldn't overcome the slow start as they lost 88-80.

The Hawks, like their non-Summer League counterparts, moved the ball well and hunted for threes. Though the Wizards eventually found their offense and cut the lead to as little as 1 in fourth quarter, the defensive never quite gelled enough to get stops in the final minutes.

Notable performances

Kelly Oubre Jr. - In addition to playing his usual pesky defense, Oubre had another big scoring night, with 21 points. Tonight’s performance was much more efficient, however, with Oubre staying aggressive and getting to the line seven times. He also had two assists, two steals, and two turnovers.

The one major knock on Oubre’s game tonight is that he all but disappeared at the end of the 4th quarter. He didn’t score a single point in the final frame, and he had a turnover that effectively killed the Wizards’ comeback hopes.

Jarrell Eddie - His defense is suspect even in Summer League, but Eddie was cooking tonight. He had 19 points on 6-12 shooting, plus 4 rebounds and a steal. He was one of the primary drivers behind the Wizards’ comeback.

Micheal Eric - Eric looked good for the second game in a row, putting up 20 points on a super efficient 8-10 shooting performance, plus a game-high 8 rebounds. He was all over the court, sneaking to the rim for putbacks and exploding off the dribble. But before you rush to ask when the Wizards will sign Eric, remember: As a 28-year old D-Leaguer, Eric is a known quantity. Whatever the Wizards’ evaluation of his talent and fit is, it will be based on a much larger body of work then a few Summer League games against rookies.

Aaron White - It was another tough game for White. He got the start again, but struggled to fit into the flow on offense, scoring just 2 points. Though he did have two assists in a little over 18 minutes, he looked over-matched defensively and struggled on the boards (ending with 3 rebounds).

The Washington Wizards kicked off Summer League action with a solid 88-73 win on Saturday over the Utah Jazz on Saturday. Now, they face a quick turnaround as they get ready to take on the Atlanta Hawks, who also come into Sunday’s 1-0 after beating the Rockets 83-78 on Thursday night.

A win for either team will go a long way to helping their chances of getting a first-round bye in the Summer League tournament, which starts later this week.

Notable players on Atlanta’s roster

DeAndre Bembry - The Hawks to Bembry with the 21st overall pick in the draft last month. He has an interesting mix of skills that should work well once he gets integrated in Atlanta’s system. He’ll probably be the one tasked with trying to slow down Kelly Oubre.

Isaia Cordinier - The Hawks took the Frenchman with the 44th overall pick last month and they intend to stash him in Europe next season, so he may not factor in much on this year’s Summer League team, but he has an interesting skillset that could be useful if he’s ready to handle NBA-level athleticism.

Lamar Patterson - Patterson’s contract is unguaranteed for the 2016-17 season, so he really needs to have a good performance in Las Vegas to solidify his spot on the roster for next season.

Taurean Prince - The Hawks traded Jeff Teague for the chance to draft Prince with the 12th overall pick last month. However, due some of the logistics of the trade, he wasn’t able to play in Thursday’s game. Assuming he’s able to play Sunday afternoon, he should be able to adjust quickly because he understands how rebounding works.

Edy Tavares - The 7’3 center is going to make it hard for the Wizards to attack the paint. Washington’s ball movement and outside shooting will really need to be on point to create good scoring opportunities.
