The Washington Mystics announced Friday that Tina Charles was granted a medical exemption and will not participate in the 2020 season. The 31-year-old has a condition called extrinsic asthma, making her more at-risk for COVID-19.

In addition to Charles, the Mystics will be without Elena Delle Donne, Natasha Cloud, and LaToya Sanders.

“While we are disappointed that Tina will not be with us this summer, we fully understand the reason for her medical exemption and look forward to having her with us next season,”

General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault said in the team’s press release. “Again, the health of our players takes precedence. There hasn’t been anything normal about playing this season, but we are prepared and excited to play with the group that is here in Florida. We are looking forward to starting our first game with Indiana on the 25th!”

The Mystics acquired Charles from the New York Liberty in a three-team deal in April.
