The big news around the Washington Mystics is that franchise player Elena Delle Donne is looking to sign elsewhere. WNBA free agency is underway, but moves cannot be announced until February.
Let’s assume that Delle Donne is on the way out. Do you now think that the Mystics need to begin their first true rebuild since 2013? If so, they should start shedding some of their other veteran contracts, most notably Natasha Cloud’s and possibly Ariel Atkins’.
Washington’s future looks like it’s in limbo heading into the new year, and they are in a situation not unlike the Wizards in recent seasons. But I do feel that the Mystics have had historically better leadership than their NBA counterparts.
And more importantly, the Mystics have at least one very young cornerstone to build around. Though she is recovering from a hip injury, Shakira Austin was on the 2022 WNBA All-Rookie team and followed that up with a strong performance in the FIBA Women’s World Cup. Regardless of whether they rebuild or retool, the Mystics should keep Austin.
A poll is below. It closes on Sunday at 12 p.m ET.
What should the Washington Mystics do if Elena Delle Donne leaves in free agency?

Keep some young cornerstones, but trade older veterans.
Tear it all down and rebuild from scratch. This also means trading Shakira Austin if a good option comes along.
Pursue another free agent to replace Delle Donne and keep remaining core players for 2024.
