The Washington Mystics will have to decide whether to keep their remaining current players, or rebuild.

I always thought that Washington Mystics forward Elena Delle Donne would retire in the nation’s capital. However, I also believe that it would be best for her to leave the team this offseason, even if I wasn’t very vocal about it.

And, it looks like the post Elena Delle Donne Era may be here.

According to Jenn Hatfield of The Next, Delle Donne is expected to sign elsewhere in the 2024 WNBA season.

There are reasons why Delle Donne would leave Washington. First, there are superteams that are made of multiple franchise players like the Las Vegas Aces and New York Liberty. Even if the Mystics stayed the course for 2024 with Delle Donne as their centerpiece, the team would be a dark horse in a best case scenario.

But there were also cues from the front office that signaled such a move could be on the way. According to Hatfield, the Mystics declined to extend Delle Donne to a contract extension during the 2023 WNBA season. And also, Michael Winger is now the President of Monumental Basketball, where he is the person whom General Manager Mike Thibault reports to.

Considering that Winger’s strategy for the Washington Wizards is to rebuild, perhaps that may be the path he envisions the Mystics taking as well.
