On Thursday, the Washington Mystics announced in a press release that center Tina Charles will miss the next three to five games due to a left gluteal strain. In other words, Charles has a left buttock injury. It was sustained on Aug. 22 when the Mystics played the Seattle Storm. Charles is averaging a career-high 25.4 points and 9.7 rebounds per game this season.
Since the Mystics are just 9-14 and 10th place in the WNBA standings, this news hurts a lot. There are just nine games left in the season and their next two games, including tonight’s, are against the eighth-seeded Dallas Wings. The Mystics must be at least eighth to earn a berth in the 2021 WNBA Playoffs.
Thankfully, the Mystics have depth in the frontcourt. Elena Delle Donne is back, although she’s also on a minutes restriction. Myisha Hines-Allen and Erica McCall are both more than capable of taking larger scoring loads. Theresa Plaisance as well. And Megan Gustafson should also have an opportunity to get some more minutes.
Here’s hoping that Charles has a safe and speedy recovery.
