The Washington Mystics signed veteran guard Shavonte Zellous on Wednesday, according to a press release.
Zellous is an 11-year veteran who started her career with the then-Detroit Shock (now Dallas Wings) from 2009-10 and six years with the Indiana Fever (2010-2015) and the New York Liberty from 2016-18. Zellous’ most recent WNBA season was in 2019 for the Seattle Storm.
During her career, Zellous was a WNBA All-Star in 2013 and was also named the Most Improved Player of the year that season for the Fever, following a championship run with the same team the previous year.
This season, she is playing for Cankaya Universitesi Ankara in the Turkish KBSL where she is averaging 22 points and 4.9 assists per game. In the press release, General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault said “Shavonte gives us a veteran, versatile wing player with championship experience,” said Thibault. “She is having a terrific season in Turkey - the third-leading scorer. She is an excellent defender, and her defensive ability will fit in perfectly with our team.”
Welcome to D.C., Shavonte.
