Like Delle Donne’s re-signing, this one is a formality.
What is interesting is that Meesseman is only missing about five or so games this season. Since she was the Mystics’ second-leading scorer (13.1 points) last season and will also be there while Delle Donne is still recovering from a back injury, there’s a good chance Washington is going to focus more of their 2020 campaign around her.
As Washington’s best player who isn’t past 30 years old, that’s not a hot take. It’s the prudent thing to do.
Meesseman’s return will be a big boost for the Mystics, who look to repeat as WNBA champions this year, especially in a free agency period where many stars have changed teams, including DeWanna Bonner, who is now with the Connecticut Sun and Skylar Diggins-Smith, who is now with the Phoenix Mercury among others.
We’ll write more about what the other teams have done in the coming weeks. But to be honest, I don’t think any move has seriously thrown Washington off from championship contender to a “dark horse.”
In other words, I have full confidence that the Mystics can still win the 2020 WNBA championship with Meesseman and Delle Donne as their star frontcourt.
WNBA opponents, BEWARE! WELCOME BACK EMMA!
