WNBA Free Agency: Leilani Mitchell signs with the Mystics

Mitchell previously played for Washington in the second half of the 2016 WNBA season and won the 2010 WNBA Most Improved player of the Year award.

On Thursday, the Washington Mystics announced that they signed Leilani Mitchell. She previously played for the Mystics in 2016 after the Olympic break.

Mitchell played the last three seasons for the Phoenix Mercury, where she averaged 12.8 points and 4.0 assists per game in the 2019 season.

The move should bolster Washington’s backcourt reserve unit and shore up the point guard position after Kristi Toliver signed with the Los Angeles Sparks earlier this week. It will also help Washington remain one of the WNBA’s top three-point shooting units, because Mitchell made 74-of-172 three pointers (and a rate of 43 percent) last season.

Welcome back, Leilani!
