On Tuesday, the Washington Mystics announced that they have re-signed Elena Delle Donne, the 2019 WNBA Most Valuable Player.
Though the Mystics lost Kristi Toliver to the Los Angeles Sparks earlier this week, it was more important that they re-sign Delle Donne, Washington’s franchise player. With Delle Donne leading the way since 2017, Washington has advanced to the WNBA semifinals or further each year.
The Mystics declined to say how much money Delle Donne would be signed for, though it’s likely that she will earn the maximum plus any bonuses for remaining stateside during the WNBA offseason. Regarding her contract length, General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault said that Delle Donne will be in Washington for four more years.
The 2019 WNBA Free Agency has been the most active in a very long time. Multiple teams, including the Los Angeles Sparks and Connecticut Sun have made big moves to challenge Washington’s place in the championship pecking order.
But make no mistake, the Mystics are still among the championship favorites as long as Delle Donne remains on their roster.
WELCOME BACK, EDD!
