Aerial Powers was anxious but happy to start in Mystics’ win vs. Dream

Powers started in place of Ariel Atkins on July 21 and scored 17 points in a big victory.

Aerial Powers speaks to the media after the Mystics’ game against the Dream on July 21.

The Mystics’ starting line-up was slightly different on Sunday afternoon when they played the Atlanta Dream. Ariel Atkins sat out Sunday’s games with left Achilles tendinitis, so Mike Thibault called Aerial Powers’ number. And she delivered.

No different than coming off the bench, Powers played her game giving everything she had to contribute to the Mystics offensively and defensively. Powers scored 17 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals and an assist. She also made 4-of-7 three pointers on Sunday.

Powers is averaging 9.9 points, and 2.6 rebounds per game this season while shooting at a career-high 39.2 percent from the three-point line. Washington won, 93-65.

After Sunday’s game I had a chance to speak to Powers about her performance. Powers said she was anxious as well as happy to get the start. The Mystics are in a very good position to have both Powers and Atkins in their rotation, which makes them very hard to stop.
