Group D is known as the “Group of Death” in Women’s EuroBasket for a reason. There are four very good teams but someone will have to be eliminated at this stage.
Belgium lost to Serbia 70-66 on Sunday. Emma Meesseman scored 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, Kim Mestdagh added 15 points. Belgium had an eight-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. However, Serbia came back to erase the deficit and then some to get the victory.
When a team has one of the top players in the world like Meesseman, that team has a chance to win any game. However, Serbia is a more established basketball power and Belgium is still a relative newcomer. They were also the hosts of the tournament so Serbia also had frontcourt advantage.
Despite the loss, Belgium’s Olympic hopes aren’t dashed yet. They will play in the playoff round to get into the quarterfinals. They will play Slovenia in Belgrade on Tuesday, July 2, 2019. Tipoff is at 12 p.m. ET and you can watch it on Livebasketball.TV.
