Pregame Notes

The Mystics can outplay their opponents each quarter for big wins

In their last win against the Sparks, the Mystics showed they can start and finish strong. Washington outscored Los Angeles in each quarter, resulting in an 81-52 win. This is exactly what didn’t happen in their first home loss of the season against the Seattle Storm last Friday.

Ariel Atkins and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough led with 22 and 17 points respectively against the Sparks. Atkins’ performance wasn’t surprising because she’s had a heck of a season so far. Walker-Kimbrough had her best offensive game this season in Los Angeles. And if anything, it should give her a confidence boost going up against the Aces.

The Mystics must focus on containing the talented Aces on both ends of the floor and just not let the foot of the gas.

Overall, Kayla McBride, Liz Cambage, A’ja Wilson and Kelsey Plum have been consistent this season

McBride, Cambage, Wilson and Plum are performing as well as expected this season. Their contributions have been pretty consistent so defensively the Mystics will have to work hard.

Kayla McBride is leading the Aces in points with 18 per game. She’s also grabbing 5.1 rebounds and dishing out 2.3 assist per game. Cambage is averaging 15 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while A’ja Wilson is putting up 13.4 points and 8 rebounds per game. Point guard Kelsey Plum averages 10.7 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3 assists per game.

The Mystics need to take better care of the ball

In Tuesday night’s game, the Mystics committed 17 turnovers. Though the Mystics lead in points off turnovers (23.8 ppg), they could have won the game by a larger margin.

Washington’s bigs must fight for rebounds

Cambage, Hamby and Wilson lead the Aces in rebounds this season. The Mystics also can’t forget to boxout Kayla McBride as she has been aggressive in grabbing an average of 5 per game.

Delle Donne, who grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds last game, is going to have to work a bit harder in the paint, especially because Cambage is taller and stronger.
