THE MYSTICS DID IT! AFTER 23 SEASONS AND A LONG REBUILD, THEY WON THEIR FIRST WNBA CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!! THEY DEFEATED THE CONNECTICUT SUN 89-78 AT HOME IN GAME 5 OF THE WNBA FINALS!

As you might expect this game, it wasn’t easy. In fact, the Mystics were fighting to stay afloat in the beginning since the Sun were leading 43-42 at halftime.

The frontcourt of Jonquel Jones and Alyssa Thomas scored a combined 25 points and 12 rebounds while the Mystics’ frontcourt of Elena Delle Donne and Emma Meesseman just weren’t in sync. Delle Donne had 10 points in the time. Meesseman just played 10 minutes when she should have played more.

Yes, Meesseman came off the bench for this one, but there was no way in hell she was staying on the bench in the last quarter. She and Aerial Powers started in the fourth quarter with Delle Donne, Kristi Toliver and Natasha Cloud to close the series out.

AND. THEY. DID!

Washington went on a 27-14 run to close out the game in the fourth quarter. Delle Donne, Meesseman and Toliver made the shots when it mattered. Meesseman led Washington with 22 points, while Delle Donne added 21 more. Natasha Cloud and Kristi Toliver scored 18 points each.

For the Sun, Jones finished with 25 points and Thomas had 21 more. Courtney Williams scored 16.

Let’s also give the Sun major props in this Finals series. They are one of the most consistent teams in the WNBA since Curt Miller became their head coach. They too, are on a championship trajectory, just like the Mystics have these last few seasons.

Again, wow! I just don’t really know what to say now. The Mystics have won the championship. I don’t care how it happened. IT. JUST. DID!
