The Mystics defeated the Mercury 103-98 on Tuesday evening.

Elena Delle Donne led the way for Washington with 30 points and 4 rebounds, while Kristi Toliver and LaToya Sander added 25 and 19 points respectively. Phoenix’s Brittney Griner scored a team-high 35 points and Diana Taurasi followed with 29 points. DeWanna Bonner put up 20 points for the Mercury.

The takeaways

Toliver and Delle Donne set the tone

The Mystics came off strong with a 30-20 lead in the first quarter. Elena Delle Donne and Kristi Toliver gave the Mystics the push they needed by scoring 16 and 14 points respectively to give Washington a 7-point lead at the half.

Mystics’ third quarter slump scare

After starting the game off strong, the Mystics fell into a third quarter slump. We’ve seen this many times this season and it hasn’t ever usually ended well. This time was an exception. The Mystics were outscored in the third quarter 18-26 but bounced back in the fourth quarter.

This is the Latoya Sanders that Washington needs

In the past three games, Sanders has put up double-digit points. Against the Mercury, she had 19 points with an impressive field goal percentage of 72.7.

Phoenix’s Big Three delivered despite loss

Diana Taurasi, DeWanna Bonner, and Brittney Griner all on the same team is a nightmare. Tonight, they showed the Mystics just that. Together they combined for 84 points. No one could truly guard Griner as she went off with 35 points.

The Mystics are playoff bound

Two weeks ago, we were talking about how realistically the Mystics could miss the playoffs this season. Now, they’ll be playing past August 19. The Mystics’ home WNBA playoff games will be held at the Smith Center at George Washington University. The Mystics didn’t just win tonight, the Aces lost as well.

Next Game

The Mystics’ next game is on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. ET when they play the Seattle Storm at home.
