The Washington Mystics (10-5) overcame a slow start to beat the New York Liberty (7-6), 67-54. This was not a pretty game. But it does give the Mystics a three game win streak.
The Mystics scored nine points in the first quarter. The Liberty had SEVEN in the third, so it was a bumpy ride for both teams.
The most outstanding stat was the Mystics bench stepping up when Elena Delle Donne and Tayler Hill shot a combined 4-27! Tianna Hawkins and Krystal Thomas combined for 20 points and 9 rebounds.
They did a great job helping hold Tina Charles to eight points, 12 below her average. I was hoping that would be the case from the bench.
The Mystics caused 21 Liberty turnovers. That was a big help.
Even though EDD shot poorly, she contributed 15 points, 9 rebounds, two assists, a steal and a blocked shot. And when she did score, it was beautiful.
The former Mystics had vastly different performances. Former long-time Mystics players Kia Vaughn and Bria Hartley returned tonight, this time in New York jerseys. Vaughn had a strong performance, where she scored 7 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, and blocked 2 shots as the starting center.
Hartley played 26 minutes off the bench and scored five points in the first half, but shot 0 for 5 from the field in the second half when Washington broke the game open.
The Mystics head out on the road Sunday to face the Los Angeles Sparks. It kicks off a five-game road trip while the Verizon Center gets geared up for some events in the 2017 Microsoft Inspire conference.
The Mystics’ next home game is on July 19 against the Dream.
