Mystics vs. Stars preview: Washington opens season on Mother’s Day

NCAA Womens Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Oklahoma City Regional-Mississippi State vs Washington Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Mystics finally open their regular season on Mother’s Day Sunday against the San Antonio Stars. Here’s the scoop.

Game Info

Where and When: Sunday, May 14, Verizon Center at 3 p.m. ET

Streaming: Monumental Sports Network (D.C. area), WNBA League Pass elsewhere

Injuries: For the Stars, Kelsey Plum has an ankle injury and missed their opener yesterday against the New York Liberty but may play today. Moriah Jefferson had a knee injury and missed yesterday’s game as well. Kayla McBride is expected to miss the game because she is coming back from international play, according to John Dudley of the Erie Times-News.

For the Mystics, Elena Delle Donne had a groin injury last week and Tayler Hill had an ankle injury. That said, they should be able to play.

Keys to the Game

Stomp on San Antonio early - The Stars are the WNBA’s worst team and they may not be able to play any of their top three guards (Plum, Jefferson, AND McBride). They are also coming from a loss to the Liberty yesterday. Meanwhile, the Mystics practiced with a full roster on Friday. So ... they gotta take care of business early.

Get the early season kinks out now - The Mystics are going on a three game west coast road trip starting this Friday, May 19 when they play the Sparks, followed by the Storm on Sunday, May 21 and the Sky for a matinee on May 24. All three games won’t be easy, so let’s take care of business against the Stars on Sunday, practice hard this week, and hit the ground running on the first long road trip.
