Continuing their regular season dominance, the Mystics beat overall-#1 seed New York Liberty at Madison Square Garden in game 1 of the WNBA Playoffs 86-83 in double overtime.
As Albert predicted, the Mystics' depth was one of their greatest assets, amplified by the fact that the game went into double overtime. While the Liberty relied on Tina Charles, Epiphanny Prince and Tanisha Wright to play over 40 minutes each, no one on the Mystics played more than 36.
Theme of the game: Balance vs. superstars
The Liberty were lead by former MVP Tina Charles and two-time All-Star Epiphanny Prince, who combined for 48 of the team’s 83 points. The Mystics, on the other hand, had four players in double figures.
The heroics:
With 29.7 seconds to go in the 4th quarter Ivory Latta hit a three to tie up the game, assisted by Emma Meesseman. Down two with just under two seconds to go in the first overtime, the pair connected again, this time with Latta finding Meesseman for a layup. Ivory Latta also hit some clutch free throws in the second overtime.
Can they finish the job and eliminate the Liberty on Sunday? It won’t be easy, but yes, they absolutely can. For now, let's celebrate!
