Mystics will play the Liberty in the WNBA Playoffs

The Washington Mystics have earned the fourth seed in the Eastern Conference where they will play a surging New York Liberty team.

The Mystics lost to the Atlanta Dream 73-71 on Sunday and finished with a 18-16 record. They will play the New York Liberty in the first round of the WNBA playoffs. The exact schedule will be determined later this week.

New York finished the season with an Eastern Conference-leading 23-11 record. However, the Mystics won the regular season series 3-1 including an 82-55 beatdown last Friday.

The series will also feature a major coaching battle between Mike Thibault and Bill Laimbeer, his counterpart there. Thibault is the WNBA's all-time leader in regular season wins while Laimbeer won three championships with the Detroit (now Tulsa) Shock from 2002-2009.

We'll have some more on this series as the week continues, but here's my quick take. The Mystics may be the fourth seed, but facing the Liberty appears to be a more favorable matchup than facing the Chicago Sky who are the second seed in the East.
