The Japan men’s national basketball team’s run in the 2020 Olympics came to an end on Sunday afternoon after a 97-77 loss to Argentina. They finish 0-3 in Group C play.

Like most of the rest of their games, Washington Wizards forward Rui Hachimura shouldered a significant part of the load, scoring 13 points in the contest, but he shot just 6-of-17 from the field today and didn’t lead in scoring. Yudai Baba was their leading scorer with 18 points while Toronto Raptors forward Yuta Watanabe added 17.

The Japanese gave up an early double digit lead to Argentina, who gradually built on it from that point on. The key stats from this game were second chance points (19-11 in favor of Argentina) and bench points (31-6 in favor of Argentina) where the Japanese were outmatched. It has been a common factor for them throughout the Olympic Games even before the tournament began.

For Argentina, Luis Scola led with 23 points and Denver Nuggets guard Facundo Campazzo added 17.

Slovenia and Spain haven’t played yet as of the time of this post. However they are the top two teams in Group C and will be in the quarterfinals. Here are all eight teams in that will participate in the round:

  • Argentina
  • Australia
  • France
  • Germany
  • Italy
  • Slovenia
  • Spain
  • United States

The quarterfinals will begin on Tuesday.
