Scott Brooks will be joining another NBA team as an assistant coach, but it won’t be the Los Angeles Lakers, as previously reported. He will be the lead assistant coach on the Portland Trail Blazers, where he will be on Chauncey Billups’ staff, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.
Former Wizards coach Scott Brooks is finalizing a deal with Portland to become Chauncey Billups’ top assistant coach, sources tell ESPN. That’s a significant addition for Billups as he builds his new staff.

Billups is a first year head coach and the move makes sense from the standpoint that he would want to hire a lead assistant coach with previous head coaching experience. Brooks has spent 12 seasons as a head coach with the Oklahoma City Thunder (2008-15) and Washington Wizards (2016-21). During his time with both teams, Brooks also has a 49-48 record in the postseason, including an appearance in the 2012 NBA Finals with the Thunder.
Congratulations to Coach Brooks for finding a landing spot where he will get to work with another All-Star backcourt in Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum. In the meantime, we here in D.C. are waiting to see who will replace Brooks as their next head coach.
