The Washington Mystics have signed center Alaina Coates and guard Shey Peddy to the 2020 WNBA season roster. The Mystics were down to nine players after guard Natasha Cloud and center LaToya Sanders opted out of the 2020 season for social justice and health reasons. These pickups were definitely needed to make Washington a more solid team to compete for another championship.

Coates comes from the championship wings of South Carolina coach Dawn Staley. Her rookie season began with the Chicago Sky in 2017 after being selected second overall in the WNBA Draft averaging 3.1 points per game and 2.9 rebounds per game. She’s also played for the Minnesota Lynx and the Atlanta Dream as well. Coates will add some depth to the center position alongside Tina Charles.
A familiar face in Peddy is what Washington fans will see this season as she’s back in uniform for the Mystics after appearing in only 15 games last season. She came in for Emma Meesseman last season who was overseas playing for the Belgium National Team. Peddy then eventually was cut from the roster once Meesseman returned, but never left the Mystics bench as she was kept as a video and analytics assistant. Although her playing time in the WNBA seemed short-lived, Peddy was able to use her talents and knowledge to dabble in coaching as well.
Peddy is also “Temple-Made” as she was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in her senior year (2011-12) at Temple University. She also was drafted by the Chicago Sky, 23rd overall in 2012.
Welcome to the squad Alaina Coates.....and Welcome back Shey Peddy!
