The Washington Mystics announced they’ve signed Essence Carson a veteran, formerly of the Phoenix Mercury.
Carson’s ability to play switch roles and a proven champion is what drew Mystics’ General Manager and Head Coach Mike Thibault to signing her. He went on to show his excitement.
“We are excited to add Essence to our team,” Head Coach and General Manager Mike Thibault said. “Her ability to play several positions and her veteran leadership will be a great addition. Above all, she’s a proven winner.”

In 12 WNBA seasons, Carson has played with the New York Liberty, Los Angeles Sparks and the Phoenix Mercury. Her time with Los Angeles sparked up two WNBA Finals appearances in 2016 and 2017 winning her first championship in 2016.
Carson averaged 5.8 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.5 assists for the Mercury during the 2019 season. Her career averages consist of 7.4 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game in 346 career games. Carson is even a EuroLeague runner-up in 2012 and EuroCup and Turkish Cup winner in 2017.
Washington will be without Natasha Cloud and LaToya Sanders in the 2020 WNBA season, so adding Carson adds even more versatility and options when it comes to the starting roles and even with reserve rotations. Due to Carson being able to play at shooting guard and small forward, Thibault can move different pieces around causing confusion for opponents.
A former champion now with a reigning championship winning team. The possibilities are endless.
Welcome to D.C. (errr uhh Florida) Essence Carson!
