On Thursday, numerous Washington Wizards and Mystics players posted on social media that the teams will hold an event, rain or shine at 6th and G Street NW in Washington, D.C on Friday, June 19 at 11 a.m. ET. This intersection is at the western boundary of Capital One Arena.

June 19 is also known as “Juneteenth,” which commemorates when United States Army general Gordon Granger read federal orders proclaiming that slaves were free on June 19, 1865 in Galveston, Texas. The day is a state holiday in Texas but observed nationwide.

It isn’t exactly clear what will happen at the event on Friday. But I think we can expect to see players from both the Wizards and Mystics in attendance to commemorate Juneteenth, as well as other continuing social causes including Black Lives Matter and police brutality.
