Deal of the Day: What would a George Hill to the Wizards trade look like?

It would look like Ish Smith and Mo Wagner heading north, is what.

NBA: Preseason-Milwaukee Bucks at Washington Wizards Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

Deal of the Day, Salary cap rules may be bent but hopefully not broken. We already broke some.

Today’s Deal: What Would a George Hill Trade Look Like?

It’s going to look a lot like the last deal, because as I type it’s my wedding anniversary weekend. As supportive and inspiring as my amazing wife is, some things take priority. Still going to find a player that could help the Wizards next season! It just won’t include five picks and a redo of my most recent mock draft.

The Wizards trade point guard Ish Smith and center Moritz Wagner to the Milwaukee Bucks for guard George Hill.

Why do the Bucks do the deal?

I think we’re going to see a shift in the Milwaukee backcourt this off season. My bet is Eric Bledsoe plays elsewhere next season. Wesley Matthews has a player option. Pat Connaughton and Kyle Korver are unrestricted free agents.

Hill is 34 and makes $9.6 million next season. Only $1.25 million of his scheduled $10 million 2021-22 salary is guaranteed.

Hill’s three-point shooting percentage in the playoffs dropped from 46% to 36%. Change is coming.

In this scenario the Bucks add a younger, quicker guard with more penetrating ability in Ish Smith. Milwaukee has consistently gone hunting for shooting bigs so Wagner instead of Jerome Robinson makes sense. Also, Wagner’s salary is needed to make the deal work.

Why do the Wizards do the deal?

This is a reset of the team’s backcourt skill. With John Wall back and Bradley Beal handling the ball as much as ever, the front office prioritizes shooting over the wiggle that Smith plays with. Hill brings shooting — 46% of his 3pt attempts last season. We’d expect him to take more than three per game though.

He doesn’t have the penetrating ability to get inside and muck things up, but his defense held up, even at 34 years old. He can play equally well off the ball with the second unit or sliding in for Beal or Wall when one of them sits.

This could put the Wizards in the market for a young third point guard — perhaps even a rookie draft pick.

Wizards would still have #9 (Okongwu), #37 (Cassius Winston)

MLE (Alec Burks or Glenn Robinson III) and the BAE (Alex Len):

  • John Wall - George Hill - Shabazz Napier (UFA)
  • Bradley Beal - Troy Brown Jr. - Jerome Robinson - Garrison Mathews (RFA)
  • Isaac Bonga - _______ - Admiral Schofield
  • Rui Hachimura - Davis Bertans (UFA)
  • Thomas Bryant - _______ - Anzejs Pasecniks (camp guarantee)
