After a bye-week in Game 6 of the BIG3, Gilbert Arenas and the Enemies (3-2) are back in action as they face off against the Power (4-1).
Arenas is the Enemies’ team captain, but he hasn’t been the team’s leading scorer or most dominant playmaker. Rather, Arenas has allowed other players to shine, most notably Craig Smith who averages 21 points per game and is among the BIG3’s top performers this season like Joe Johnson is for the Triplets. Royce White is their second overall leading scorer, but he is nowhere near the level of Smith so far.
Before people start wondering if Arenas is deteriorating, perhaps his lower production is by design.
Last month, our own Ben Mehic interviewed Arenas after the Enemies’ game in Providence, R.I. In that interview, Arenas was more willing to let other players shine and perhaps get one more crack at the NBA:
“The NBA, overseas — let the young guys get their turn,” Arenas said. “I had my turn. I had years to come back. As a veteran, you have to understand there’s other people having the same dream you had. Let them get the chance. That’s how I’ve always felt.”
Arenas has still shown that he can make big shots if his number’s called, so we’ll see if he takes a more prominent role when the Enemies play later Saturday afternoon.
