Spurs are finalizing a trade to send F Davis Bertans to the Wizards, league sources tell ESPN. Bertans will be absorbed into an exception, allowing Spurs to complete deal for DeMarre Carroll.— Adrian Wojnarowski (@wojespn) July 6, 2019
The trade for the Latvian forward appears to be made to address their need for a post who can make threes reliably. Bertans averaged 8.0 points per game for San Antonio last season and made 42.9 percent of his three-point shots (145-of-338 attempts).
For the Spurs, they were looking to acquire DeMarre Carroll, as Wojnarowski noted. So Washington once again played as a facilitator in a larger trade while not giving up too many assets.
I don’t see this trade negatively affecting rookie Rui Hachimura. But perhaps Bertans could start right away while Hachimura gets acclimated to the NBA style of play.
