The Wizards have managed to shed the Dwight Howard contract from their books in exchange for taking Memphis Grizzlies’ CJ Miles contract:
The Grizzlies are trading CJ Miles to Washington for Dwight Howard, league source tells ESPN. Deal saves Memphis $3.1M. Grizzles will waive or trade Howard, per source.

Miles averaged 6.3 points per game for the Raptors and Grizzlies.
The price to cover up the disastrous player option given to Howard by Grunfeld is that the Wizards will absorb the extra $3.1 million in salary owed to CJ Miles to facilitate the locker-room reboot that will give Thomas Bryant and Moritz Wagner a clean slate to prove their talents in the center position. Howard’s salary was estimated at $5.6M while Miles’ is about $8.7M.
Wizards fans probably will not forget quickly how well CJ Miles played against Washington in the playoffs in 2018 hitting that famous three-pointer to seal Game 1 after a Kelly Oubre turnover:
Welcome to Washington, CJ!
