The extension news is no surprise. But the Wizards want Beal to stay by any means necessary.

The Wizards were planning to sign Beal to a three-year, $111 million extension since last June. But now, the Wizards seem to be willing to shorten that, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

In Wojnarowski’s report on Monday, the Wizards plan to offer Beal the three-year extension on Friday regardless. Even Beal’s agent Mark Bartelstein has positive feedback on the Wizards in general. But Beal still wants to take his time.

Either way, Wizards General Manager Tommy Sheppard told Wojnarowski that they would offer Beal a shorter extension if that was Beal’s request.

The announcement of Monumental Basketball is big and it’s a selling point that Sheppard wants to make to Beal. Though I would like Beal to stay with the Wizards, I’m still with the mindset that they are better off trading Beal for salary cap relief and more draft picks. The Wizards may have a great front office, but without salary cap space, they won’t be able to make many moves besides signing low impact players.
