The Wizards concluded their Las Vegas Summer League play last week and now focus their attention on Bradley Beal, who is expected to be offered a three-year, $111 million contract later in July. That will make the next few weeks quite interesting for Wizards fans and the NBA at large.
According to Candace Buckner of The Washington Post on Sunday, an unnamed NBA source believes that Beal is “out of there.” If Beals refuses to sign the extension for whatever reason ,then it is probably a sign that he will play elsewhere sooner rather than later.
Why would Beal want to leave the Wizards? One possible reason is because Tommy Sheppard is still the Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations as of the date this article was published. It has been over three months since Ernie Grunfeld was fired and no one has officially replaced him.
But even if Sheppard were given the permanent title, Beal also wants to win games with his NBA team. The Wizards unfortunately have let most of their restricted free agents walk, including Tomas Satoransky, Bobby Portis and Jabari Parker.
Though Ish Smith, Isaiah Thomas, Rui Hachimura and Moritz Wagner could be solid replacements with time, the Wizards are still probably not making the playoffs in the 2019-20 season and perhaps longer than that.
