According to Chase Hughes of NBC Sports Washington, Bobby Portis and Jabari Parker are operating as if they will not play for the Wizards in the 2019-20 season.
Bobby Portis and Jabari Parker are both operating at the start of the free agency with the expectation they will not be returning to the Wizards, @NBCSWashington has learned. Wizards have given them the impression they are focusing on other players.— Chase Hughes (@ChaseHughesNBCS) June 30, 2019
This should come as no surprise. The Wizards refused to pick up Parker’s $20 million team option, largely because of salary cap reasons. They did pick up Portis’ qualifying offer, but other teams are likely giving him a salary that Washington doesn’t want to match.
So here’s the gist of these decisions:
- The Wizards are paying for Ernie Grunfeld’s past mistakes by refusing to pick up some younger players who could provide a positive impact.
- They are all-in on Hachimura and Thomas Bryant out of necessity.
- The Wizards will have two players in John Wall and Ian Mahinmi on the roster who will provide little to no value on the court in 2019-20. Wall will probably not play next season due to an Achilles injury and Mahinmi is less of a liability when he is off the court than on it.
- We will sing “Tout Oublier (Forget Everything)” by Belgian singer Angelé Van Laeken — IN FRENCH BY HEART — as our theme song of the 2019-20 season. After all, it’s apparent that Tommy Sheppard is willing to not “clean up” his predecessor’s mistakes. That may mean more losses in the short term, but it could pay off long-term.
