An Easy Playoff Fix For Every Sport

After reading about how Dem Boyz got thumped last night by Chicago, a lot of chatter has been about how the NFC East would be fielding a champ in the playoffs with a losing record. That is an issue being reverberated across all of major sports I can think of, especially in the run of the NBA’s Least Coast Conference that’s been on a tear for years. It got me thinking, is there a simple fix to this?

One idea I have not heard discussed, that I think would be quite fair across all sports, is that there should be no losers in the playoffs. How that could look for any league is fairly simple:

If a team ends the season with a record of .500 or worse, can lose their spot to the team with the best remaining record league wide. Here’s an example of how this could look:

1. (Team) A: 60-22

2. B: 58-24

3. C 41-41

4. D 47-35

5. E 44- 38

6. F 44-38

7. G 40-42

8. H 38-44

.....

So, under a new playoff format, teams C, G and H could lose their spots. Any team that didn’t qualify for the playoffs in either division could supplant their spots. So let’s say Teams I, J, and K all had 43 wins each. That’s better than Teams C, G and H, so they would get seeded in based record. The new playoff arrangement would be as follows:

1. A 60-22

2. B 58-24

3. D 47-35

4. E 44-38

5. F 44-38

6. I 43-41

7. J 43-41

8. K 43-41

What do you all think? I think it would help more teams work harder to get those last playoff spots if they really want them. Crowds the field and makes a few more reg. season games more interesting.

This idea has probably been done before, but if not, make sure Adam Silver, Roger Goodell, and the rest of those old white guys get me my coin please!
