In the first game of the 2019-20 NBA season, the Washington Wizards lost to the Dallas Mavericks 108-100 in their season opener.
The Wizards went through plenty of changes during the offseason which included the acquisitions of Isaiah Thomas, CJ Miles, Davis Bertans, drafting Rui Hachimura and Admiral Schofield. Tommy Sheppard was also promoted to General Manager and Monumental Basketball was created. After all of these changes, the Wizards finally got to see them in full display.
Throughout the game, Washington was behind by double digits most of the game until the fourth quarter where the team outscored Dallas 32-17.
Bradley Beal, who recently signed a 2 year extension led the team in scoring department with 19 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists in 32 minutes. Beal didn’t have his best shooting night as he went 7-of-25 from the field even having a ugly 1-of-11 shooting from the three-point arc. Beal ended getting ejected late in the fourth quarter due to some trash talk with Dallas Forward Luka Doncic.
Washington first round pick Hachimura had a great effort in his debut. The Japanese import posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 7-of-15 from the field. Thomas Bryant also had a double double with 14 points 11 rebounds.
Offseason acquisition Moritz Wagner had a productive night as well with 13 points with 4-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from the three-point line but fouled out early in the fourth.
The Mavericks were aided by dominant performances by Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis. In his first game in a Mavs uniform, Porzingis dropped 23 points and 4 rebounds while Doncic posted a statline of 32 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists shooting 12-of-19 from the field in 32 minutes of play.
