Wizards signing John Jenkins after releasing Gary Payton II, according to reports

The Wizards are releasing Gary Payton II and signing John Jenkins to a contract according to multiple reports.

Candace Buckner of the Washington Post reported the Wizards did not renew Payton II’s 10-day contract after Wednesday’s win over the Pacers. Then, just an hour later, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported the Wizards were completing a deal to sign John Jenkins of the Westchester Knicks to a 10-day deal.

Payton II only played 16 minutes in a Wizards uniform, but he made the most of them. He had 11 points and 4 assists in those minutes, most of which came as part of Washington’s desperate rally on Tuesday to nearly steal a win from the Cavaliers. He will return to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, who hold his G-League rights.

The Hawks drafted Jenkins with the 23rd overall pick in the 2012. He played three years in Atlanta but struggled to earn playing time and didn’t get his fourth-year option picked up. Since then, he’s bounced around with the Mavericks, Suns, the Westchester Knicks, and the San Pablo Burgos of the Spanish ACB.

Jenkins should provide a boost for Washington’s three-point shooting, which ranks 22nd in the league. He is averaging 24.9 points per game and shooting 43.2 percent from beyond the arc on 7.6 attempts per game with Westchester this season.
