News came out on Tuesday night that the Wizards won’t be included in this year’s Christmas Day showcase, and it appears those won’t be the only high-profile TV games they’ll be excluded from this season. Washington is only slated to play nine games on national TV in 2018-19, down from 18 last season, according to Candace Buckner of The Washington Post.
The big drop in TV appearances was inevitable after their performance last season. Washington underwhelmed most of the season, and John Wall missed several of the team’s high-profile games with injuries, which surely had an impact on Washington’s ratings.
Of course, the important thing to keep in mind is national games are subject to change, especially when it comes to ESPN’s games on Wednesday and Friday. If the Wizards exceed expectations, like they did in 2016-17, the league will flex them into more showcase games. If they don’t, they could just as easily lose some of the rare national TV appearances they’ve been given.
The NBA will release the full opening week national TV schedule on Wednesday afternoon at 2 pm Eastern Time.
