Roster Preview for 2018-19

It wasn't a splashy offseason for the Wiz, but the moves they made were consequential. They added depth and versatility, and at least attempted to fill the needs that John Wall asked for. They may make some more moves, but I believe that the general core of this years roster is set. And with that, it's time to analyze.

Players Added

Troy Brown Jr.

Thomas Bryant

Austin Rivers

Jeff Green

Dwight Howard

Players Lost

Marcin Gortat

Mike Scott

Chris Mcculough

Tim Frazier

TBD

Ty Lawson

Clearly, the Wizards added players of WAY more quality. Outside of Scott and Gortat, none of the players lost were relevant in last years rotation. Thomas Bryant and Troy Brown are young players with upside. Rivers, Green, and Howard are skilled veterans, but inconsistent. On any given night any one of those guys could look like the best player on the court, and on other nights they vanish. But to me, that's peanuts. Howard is better than Gortat by a country mile, Rivers can replace Scott's scoring, and Jeff Green adds versatility and athleticism.

Depth Chart

PG: John Wall, Tomas Satoransky

SG: Bradley Beal, Austin Rivers, Jodie Meeks

SF: Otto Porter Jr., Kelly Oubre Jr., Troy Brown Jr.

PF: Markieff Morris, Jeff Green, Jason Smith

C: Dwight Howard, Ian Mahinmi, Thomas Bryant

For once, the starting five can be malleable as different parts can be inserted for different matchups. The standard starting five has a prototypical player at every position, is well rounded, and looks scary. The bench is loaded, as any of the five reserves could spot start. Sato and Rivers are interchangeable at the one and the two, Oubre can slide from the 2 to the 4, Green can play from the 3 to the 5, and there a multitude of small ball lineups.

The Wiz aren't as deep as Boston, but they match up well. Toronto wouldn't stand a chance now, as the only reason they won that series was because of their bench, but the Wizards new acquisitions mitigate that advantage. Lowry Derozan Anunoby Ibaka Valanciunas loses at every position but PF, and even then Markieff Morris is no pushover. Howard can guard Embiid better than Gortat, and Morris also has the size andshiftiness to guard Embiid. Ben Simmons is a beast, but Green and Porter stand a chance of slowing him down. Philly has no one who can guard Beal or Wall unless Zhaire Smith develops fast. Milwaukees dependence on Giannis, Middleton, and Bledsoe plus a weak bench hinders them, and they still don't have Jabari Parker back. The Pacers won't be able to guard both Wall and Beal, and I have a feeling that Myles Turner isn't strong enough to stop Dwight. Mami and Charote lack star power. Every other EC team is rebuilding.

So there's my logic, it could be wrong and it could be right. I think the Wiz have a real shot of being the EC 2nd best team if everything goes right. That's a BIG if.
