What to Watch For

Can the Wizards close better than they did on Tuesday?

Fans know the pattern: The game begins and Washington secures a healthy lead. Slowly but surely, they lose their momentum and before you know it, they’re hanging on for dear life in the closing minutes. Their struggles closing games are an anchor holding the team down as other teams sail past them.

Tuesday’s game between the Wizards and Heat was a prime example. Although Washington pulled out the win in overtime, Bradley Beal missed an opportunity to seal the win in regulation and the team nearly gave the game away at several points in overtime due to miscues and poor execution.

It’s very easy to point to certain players whose field goal percentage is low in late game situations, but at some point everyone needs to step up and be reliable to help Washington close games. The Wizards can beat anyone on a given night, but a flaw like this could send them home early in the playoffs if they can’t figure out in the month between now and the playoffs. We’ll see if they learned anything from the mistakes they made against the Heat earlier in the week.
