If you wanted to build an argument that the Wizards are a talented team that struggles with motivation, perhaps the best place to start is looking at how they perform once their pride is at stake.

In Monday’s loss against the Pacers, the Wizards put together a 19-0 run to turn what was shaping into a blowout back into a competitive game before ultimately falling short. It’s the latest in a pattern of losses where the team gets down big early, puts together a furious run to get back in the game, and then run out of steam in the final minutes.

When you plot out the team’s net rating based on the scoring margin, it’s pretty clear when the team ramps things up:

If Washington could just find a way to harness the energy they exert when a game is getting out of hand into when the game is still close, they could be a very fearsome team.
