One of the highlights of the 2016-17 season was the Wizards winning the Southeast Division title. While a division title may not mean as much as it used to, it was still a notable achievement for a franchise that had not claimed a division title since 1979.
Now that the Wizards have finally broken through, it begs the question: Should the Wizards hang a banner to celebrate their achievement? They have ones for previous division and conference titles, but it’s been a long time since they had reason to add a new one.
Now that the Wizards have actually done something banner-worth in the Ted Leonsis era, we’ll get a chance to better understand his approach to adding banners for the Wizards. If he wants to establish some consistency between his NHL team and his NBA team, we should see a new banner in the rafters this October. However, if he sees a championship banner as the banner to end all banners, well then this would be a good time to change things around to reflect that.
