Wizards at Knicks preview: Washington looks for season sweep on Thursday

New, comments
NBA: New York Knicks at Washington Wizards Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Wizards head to Madison Square Garden Thursday evening as they look for the season sweep against the Knicks. After a tough end to the road trip, Washington got back on track with a win over a feisty Charlotte team fighting for their playoff life.

New York, who has been eliminated from playoff contention, have won three of their past five games including wins over Miami and Chicago. This is a somewhat different team that the Wizards will face as Carmelo Anthony’s role has diminished and Derrick Rose is out for the season.

Washington must win this game to keep pace with the Raptors and stay on track for a 50-win season.

What to watch:

The Wizards can’t take the Knicks lightly

One of the most dangerous teams is one who has nothing to play for. The Knicks will be playing free on Thursday evening because they have nothing to play for. Since Derrick Rose got injured and was eliminated from playoff contention, the Knicks have gone 2-2 with wins against Chicago and at Miami.

Washington can’t afford to let New York linger around in this one. They must jump on them from the get-go.

Will the Kelly Oubre experience continue?

Kelly Oubre is in the midst of one of the if not the best, stretch of basketball that he’s played in his career. Over the west coast road trip, Oubre scored most of his points on dunks or layups. On Tuesday night against Charlotte, all of Oubre’s points came on jump shots or from the foul line. This was very good to see as it looked like Oubre lost his touch from three-point range.

Can he keep this hot streak rolling?

Insert generic defensive concern here _____.

Not to beat a dead horse but I think we all can agree, the Wizards defensive issues are still a big problem. If the Wizards can lock down on the defensive end, this one could be over quickly. However, if they don’t, expect this game to be played in the 110’s.

Wizards Killer: Ron Baker

Carmelo Anthony refers to him as Ron Burgundy. Need I say more?
