The Mystics have signed unrestricted free agent point guard Kristi Toliver to a contract, per Gene Wang of The Washington Post:
Breaking: #Mystics have signed All-Star PG Kristi Toliver, formerly of WNBA champion LA Sparks & 2006 NCAA champion @umdwbb. Story to come.
— Gene Wang (@gene_wang) February 6, 2017
Toliver was the 3rd pick in the 2009 WNBA Draft where she played for the Chicago Sky (2009) and Los Angeles Sparks (2010-16) where she won a championship in 2016. Before her WNBA career, Toliver played for Maryland where she won the NCAA championship in 2006, her freshman year. She made the All-Star Game in 2013.
Internationally, Toliver plays for UMMC Ekaterinburg alongside current forward Emma Meesseman. She also holds a passport from Slovakia, where she played on their national team in EuroBasket Women 2015, and presumably will do so again this year.
As a player, Toliver is one of the WNBA’s best three point shooters where you can expect her to open up the floor. She will presumably be the team’s starting point guard.
Overall, this is a huge signing for Washington. First they got Elena Delle Donne. Now, they got the one of the best unrestricted free agents on the market. The Mystics are now officially a team to be dealt with in the WNBA championship picture!
