The NBA regular season starts tonight! Here are the games going on tonight. And feel free to talk about them on this thread.
What’s the narrative? This is a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals. But the bigger story line is that Kyrie Irving was traded to the Celtics in exchange for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, a 2018 first round pick (that originally comes from the Brooklyn Nets), and a 2020 second round pick.
In short, Kyrie now is the franchise star for the Celtics, who lost theirs to the Cavs. But furthermore, Irving seemed to force his way out of Cleveland so he can “do what he can do” without LeBron James in his way. That narrative makes this game even more intriguing given the circumstances.
What’s the narrative? In 2015, the Rockets made the Western Conference Finals to face the Warriors and believed they were with the elite. But they had a setback in the 2015-16 season though they came back very strong this past season after Mike D’Antoni was hired as their head coach and James Harden played point guard full-time.
The Rockets now brought in Chris Paul who many consider to be the best point guard in the league, but he’s still looking for a Conference Finals appearance after over a decade in the NBA. It will be interesting to see how Harden meshes with Paul. There’s also a bit of Wizards nostalgia with Houston’s roster because Trevor Ariza and Nene both play major roles on this team as well.
As for the Warriors, this is their first game after winning the NBA title last June. They made no major moves to the top of their roster, but we do get to see JaVale McGee and Nick Young reunite on the same team again.
