Good news, Wizards fans living in the Richmond area: It looks like the team may be headed back to your area for training camp in September.
J. Michael of CSN Mid-Atlantic is reporting the team is close to a deal to put at least part of training camp back on VCU’s campus back this season:
The agreement to return to VCU hasn't been completed such as how much of camp –- just part or all of it – will be held there. Last year, the Wizards spent a few days at Towson University outside Baltimore to start camp and continued it at Verizon Center.
According to follow-up reports from Marc Davis of NBC 12 in Richmond and Mike Szvetitz of the Richmond Times-Dispatch, it’s expected to be a year-to-year deal.
The Wizards haven’t held a training camp in Richmond since 2009. That season, the team also hosted a preseason game in front of a sellout crowd at VCU’s Siegel Center against the Memphis Grizzlies. You may recall Allen Iverson, who grew up in nearby Hampton, was the main draw for the game, but didn’t play in the game due to an injury.
