Cousins or bust

It is my opinion that this team will never sniff a championship as constructed. Time is running out on Wall's contract. Other than John, Brad is the only player better than league average at their position, and Brad's injury woes have become an annual event and will likely always be a factor, such as his inability to play heavy minutes. Otto is a nice player to have but his skill set isn't really what this team needs and the idea that he will one day become aggressive and impose himself on games seems far removed from reality at this point. Kelly is a nice developmental piece but he has a long ways to go before he can be considered a core piece. Morris brings some nice things, but there's a lot to be desired and his inability to develop a consistent three point shot lowers his value. Everyone else is old and getting older.

Selling the farm to rebuild around John and DMC, who will make less than $40 mil combined over several years, with ample cap space and hopefully an asset or two left over from the DMC ttrade, would really allow us to get off the treadmill. Adding a respected coach like Thibbs could give us a real chance at landing a big free agent or two. There's also the fact that John and Demarcus are very close, which would be a great sell on keeping both when their deals are up in a few years.

Rondo brings some nice things to the table but DMC has never played with a game changing point guard like John. I'd trade everybody if that's what it took, but we'd likely be able to hold onto one of Morris, Porter, Oubre to add to the mix. We'd have a solid 50 million to build a team with two perennial all stars just entering their prime and a solid starter. Depending on who's available in free agency, we might have another down year where we fight to make the playoffs, but we'd have a real chance at building a true contender.

A team starting Wall Alan Anderson KD Morris Cousins would likely be around $75 mil. You could probably find a solid upgrade for Anderson and put together a real nice bench. There's also Horford and Batum if you can't coax KD to DC. Regardless, with Wall and Cousins being on relatively cheap deals there's a great opportunity to create a real contender. I'd make Sacramento a godfather offer leading up to the draft and see if they can refuse it.
