Wizards vs. Kings final score: Beal scores 31 as the Washington grits out 101-95 overtime win

Bradley Beal scored 31 points including a career-high seven three-pointers as the Wizards outlast the Kings in overtime and win, 101-95. John Wall had a near triple-double with 19 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds but also had a career-worst 11 turnovers. Wall’s Kentucky teammate, DeMarcus Cousins, had a very impressive stat line with 36 points and 20 rebounds for the Kings, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Wizards outscored the Kings 9-3 in the overtime period.

The Wizards started this game hot, shooting 6 of 12 from the field including three three-pointers from Bradley Beal but led by just four, 16-12, as the Kings were knocking down their shots as well.

Things came to a halt in the second quarter as the reserves were unable to get anything going on the offensive end. The Wizards committed 14 turnovers in the first half and looked lifeless at times but trailed by just three, 53-50 at halftime.

The Wizards kept the game close throughout the third quarter and took their first lead in the second half on a jumper from Bradley Beal as time expired with the Wizards leading 74-72 entering the fourth quarter.

The Wizards led 88-80 with five minutes to play in this one. DeMarcus Cousins led the Kings on a 10-4 run to end the fourth quarter as we’d be all tied up and go into overtime.

In the overtime period, the Kings went ice-cold from the field. Bradley Beal would hit a three-pointer off a Morris offensive rebound to stretch the lead to five, 97-92 as the Wizards would close this one out for their sixth victory of the season.

Bradley Beal stays hot

Beal continued his scoring tear as he added 31 points on 12-24 shooting including a career-high seven three-pointers. Beal was the scoring spark the Wizards needed tonight in a game where the Wizards showed very little energy and struggled to score at times. Beal knocked down four of his three-pointers in the first half but the most important one came in overtime to stretch the Wizards’ lead to five, 97-92.

Beal overcame what looked like a rolled ankle late in the game that left him thriving in pain. Bradley Beal has now eclipsed the 30 point mark in three of the past five games.

The Wizards had a lifeless second quarter

The Wizards’ second quarter performance mirrored the energy in the stands at Verizon Center, lethargic. The Wizards committed nine turnovers in the period as the Kings outscored them 34-25. Brooks went with the lineup of Satoransky-Burke-Oubre-Smith-Morris to start the period and it was unsurprisingly ineffective. The Wizards struggled to score early on in the quarter and more often than not, just stood around the three-point arc while either Morris or Oubre was forced to put up a tough shot.

Surprisingly, the Wizards didn’t relinquish the lead until the starters were reinserted and finished out the quarter. John Wall and Coach Scott Brooks received technical fouls in what was a quarter to forget for the Wizards.

Once again, the Wizards get next to no production from the bench

Kelly Oubre Jr. had his best game of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds (a career-high) off of the bench tonight. Oubre also found himself in the right place at the right time with a couple of easy put backs at the rim. Unfortunately, outside of Oubre, there wasn’t much else to talk about from the reserves. In the first half, Burke, Satoransky, Smith, and Nicholson combined for more fouls (5) than points (2). With Marcin Gortat in foul trouble, DeMarcus Cousins went right at Smith and Nicholson and neither of them could do anything about it.

The bench wasn’t much better in the second half and combined for just eight points. It wasn’t pretty, but it was enough to get the job done.
