The David West Sweepstakes is now one of the hotter topics in NBA Free Agency. Earlier this week, the Wizards and Spurs were competing for his services. But now, it looks like the Cleveland Cavaliers are also in the mix and may even be the team that West is leaning towards. According to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski:
Sources: Cleveland hasn't only worked itself into contention for David West, Cavs took slight lead on Spurs. Pop isn't done recruiting yet.
— Adrian Wojnarowski (@WojYahooNBA) July 4, 2015
West has ties to the State of Ohio, most notably from his college days at Xavier, where he was the AP National Player of the Year and Oscar Robertson Trophy winner in the 2002-03 season. Woj also added in a later tweet that he has family connections there as well.
Even though the Cavaliers are a legitimate NBA championship contender -- so long as LeBron James re-signs in the coming days -- I don't see how this makes much sense for West from a playing time perspective. Kevin Love has already agreed to sign a five-year, $110 million deal and the team is working on a long-term deal for Tristan Thompson though it's not finalized yet.
If Thompson somehow doesn't re-sign with the Cavs, then it does make a lot more sense for West to play there. Fear the Sword's Mike Mayer also asked many of the same questions earlier today when talks about West to Cleveland started heating up.
Stay tuned in this free agency race as we see which side of the Wizards vs. Cavaliers rivalry, if any, that David West takes in the coming days.
