The Wizards should consider UConn's Kevin Ollie as a possible head coach candidate

Kevin Jairaj-USA TODAY Sports

The point of this post is not to bash Randy Wittman. I like Randy as a person and I think he has truly given everything he has to the organization. I also think it's not entirely his fault for the way the team operates (looking at your roster construction Ernie). That being said, however, I feel he has taken the team as far as he can. He is probably maxed out as a coach in today's NBA and simply put is not the right man for the job after the season. I will continue to root for the squad and for Randy because I love the Wiz but keeping him another year would be a mistake.

One name I rarely seen mentioned here is UConn men's basketball head coach Kevin Ollie. I am actually shocked he doesn’t get more chatter around these parts. I think going after Ollie is almost a no brainer and he should be our #1 target.

Much like Steve Kerr, Ollie is an NBA lifer

He was a leader in every locker room he stepped in (A LOT of locker rooms). Almost every NBA player who was ever teammates with Ollie called him one of the most professional players they had ever seen. His preparation was unmatched and his knowledge of the game as a player was valued by all of his teammates. Also similar to Kerr, he has never coached in the league. Do I care? Absolutely not. He probably knows more about the league right now than some of the coaches currently on the Wiz staff. Hell he only retired from playing in 2010… which leads me to my next point.

The Durant Factor

His final season in the league 2009-2010, Ollie played for OKC. Here is an exact quote from Durant: NBA player Kevin Durant in an interview with Grantland said that Kevin Ollie (who played for Oklahoma City Thunder in 2009-2010) "taught him the ropes," and "changed the culture of Oklahoma City." He also said, "Kevin Ollie, he was a game changer for us. I think he changed the whole culture in Oklahoma City. Just his mind set, professionalism, every single day. And we all watched that, and we all wanted to be like that. It rubbed off on Russell Westbrook, myself, Jeff Green, James Harden. And then everybody who comes through now, it’s the standard that you’ve got to live up to as a Thunder player. And it all started with Kevin Ollie."

Ollie would already have one season under his belt when KD becomes a free agent. You think he wouldn’t be a HUGE selling point for KD??? Jesus he could literally be our MAIN selling point.

Ollie can take John Wall and Bradley Beal to the next level

The guy was a professional guard for 13 seasons and mentored plenty of younger perimeter players at each stop. Not to mention, he played well. I believe Wall and Beal have a lot more to offer us and Randy simply can’t tap into that potential. He is trying but he is just so limited as a coach.

Ollie can flat out coach

His first season after inheriting a mess from Calhoun (NCAA Sanctions) he led them to a very solid 20-10 season with no opportunity to play in the tourney. In his second season, Ollie won the national championship despite the fact that the Huskies entered the tournament as a 7-seed. This season, UConn is currently 15-11, but this is also partly because they are in a rebuilding season. Final Four MVP Shabazz Napier graduated and DeAndre Daniels declared for the NBA Draft a year early.

Kevin Ollie is the right man for the job. Offer him a 5-year, $20 million deal and be done with it.
