The Washington Wizards are bringing in at least one big man for extra competition in training camp this season. According to J. Michael of CSN Washington and Jorge Castillo of the Washington Post, the Wizards are going to sign Daniel Orton for training camp this season.
This won't be Orton's first involvement with the Wizards. He played with Otto Porter and Glen Rice Jr. in the Vegas Summer League, where he started all five games and averaged 4.4 points and 5 rebounds in 16.4 minutes of action per game. Orton also has ties with John Wall, with whom he played in college at Kentucky.
The Wizards currently have 14 of their 15 roster spots locked in with players who have already signed guaranteed contracts. Orton will join Rasual Butler, Xavier Silas, and Damion James, and a yet to be signed point guard to help while Garrett Temple is injured, in a battle for the final roster spot, should they choose to use it.
The odds are against Orton making the final roster, since the Wizards are well-stocked in frontcourt with Marcin Gortat, Nene, Kris Humphries, DeJuan Blair, Drew Gooden and Kevin Seraphin already on the roster. But if nothing else, Orton's familiarity with the Wizards through his time at the Summer League should be helpful as the Wizards prepare for the regular season.
