The Wizards have a new D-League team!
Oh, did you think it was their own? Well, it's not. But good news! It's much closer to Washington, D.C., and it recently won the D-League Championship!
According to a source close to CSNWashington, the Wizards have ended their affiliation with the Iowa Energy and have a new affiliation with the Fort Wayne Mad Ants.
Since the Memphis Grizzlies became singularly affiliated with the Energy earlier this year, the Wizards needed another team for call-downs (is that a thing? Let's make that a thing.) and rehab assignments. The Grizzlies are one of 14 teams in the NBA that has their own D-League affiliate. The rest of the league "shares" the Mad Ants.
There has been some scuttlebutt in recent years that the D-League may expand more than it already has - this past year saw more single affiliation plus the creation of a new team - but for now, it looks like the system is going to remain how it is. Though it'd certainly be fun to see 15 new teams sprout up, giving every team their own affiliate.
This move shouldn't impact the Wizards too much this year anyway, since the team is likely content with not using the D-League this year with their veteran-heavy squad.
