It's been a difficult day for everyone under the SB Nation NBA umbrella, as we must sadly report that Tim Allen, one of the lead bloggers at our Timberwolves site Canis Hoopus, has passed away. Details of the circumstances behind his death have not been confirmed at this time, and we have decided not to speculate out of respect to his family.
Unlike many of my colleagues, I never got to meet Tim in person. He arrived in Las Vegas for Summer League after I had left, and our schedules for covering national events never aligned. But I did follow his writing, and it was very clear that he was a rising star in our world.
There's a certain way to write that merges professional reporting with the fan perspective and voice that powers our sites, and it's incredibly difficult to do. I walk that balance as a writer every day, and I know I don't always do it well. It's a constant struggle, one that involves a lot of self-reflection and practice. There are some great writers who can't provide voice without losing their professional quality. There are some great fan voices that have trouble finding that professional tone.
Tim Allen, from everything that I have read and followed of his, was a master at striking that balance. One look at his last feature on Brandon Roy's introductory press conference just confirms that. It's insightful, balanced and flows all the way through, making you want to read from beginning to end. We are losing an incredibly talented voice in our network.
There will be some sort of fund set up to honor Tim's memory. When that fund is set up, I will let everyone know.
